Vanity Fair and Gucci Toast Cannes

I caught a fit of the giggles on my way to the party hosted by Vanity Fair and Gucci for the Cannes Film Festival last night. Partly, I was laughing at the absurd splendor of the setting, at the tip of the Cap d’Antibes, five miles from Cannes as the crow flies, but ten by the road that hugs the Mediterranean coast and winds along the craggy peninsula. But I was also laughing as a purely physical response, as Franck, the driver of the car I was cadging a ride in, decided to demonstrate the propulsive power and turning radius of the brand new Maserati Granturismo. But unless you had bare shoulders (which I didn’t), the temperature outside was perfect. The only lights at large came from yachts moored 100 feet away. Inland from the party, the stone pines were illuminated in warm hues, through smoke of an indeterminate origin. One level below, giant letters spelling “VANITY FAIR” floated on the infinity pool, and “GUCCI” lay at the bottom. I’m told frogmen were required to place the letters there.
