How I Learned to Love the Car Bomb

I don’t like St. Patrick’s Day. Actually, that’s not fair. What I don’t like is all of the amateur drinkers pouring out of Irish pubs every March 17th. But I’ll admit that many years ago, I too was one of those amateurs. In retrospect, I’m glad I joined the drunken shamrock-wearing masses; if it weren’t for this culturally-sanctioned shitshow, I would have never been introduced to one of my favorite cocktails: the Car Bomb.
I know what you’re thinking: Together with the vodka Ice-luge and Jello-shot, the Car Bomb completes the frat-drink trifecta.
You’re not wrong about this. But have you tried a proper Car Bomb lately? Because that shit is delicious. The faint smokiness of Guinness tinged with the sweetness of Bailey’s and the bite of Irish Whiskey? Strip away all of the Car Bomb’s drunken, fratty associations and you have yourself a solid dessert drink.
It’s just that Saint Patrick’s Day has given the Car Bomb a bad reputation— if you limit your Car Bomb intake to SPD, chances are you’re getting an inferior one. All those bartenders who sign up for a March 17th shift (God bless them) are making these things hand over fist, and serving them in disposable plastic shot glasses. While these glasses require no washing and are less dangerous in fights, they don’t sink the bottom of the pint glass the way they should— leaving you with a curdled mess of Bailey’s as a floater on your Guinness.
There’s a simple solution: Don’t order a Car Bomb on St. Paddy’s Day. Yes, you may get an odd look when ordering one in the middle of June, but trust us— it’s a drink you should embrace. Preferably after a meal. And definitely not in Belfast.
