It’s one of the biggest myths surrounding the birth control pill: Women over 35 shouldn’t take the Pill because of an increased risk of heart disease. But is it true? Most doctors and researchers say no, according to US News & World Report.
But that answer comes with an asterisk. Women over 35 may want to reconsider taking the Pill if they have other risk factors for heart disease. Estrogen from birth control pills puts strain on blood vessels, and any additional outside stresses should be avoided. The major risk is, of course, smoking. Even women under 35 who take the Pill shouldn’t smoke it significantly increases your risk of a blood clot, stroke, or heart attack.
Women over 35 who already have heart-related health problems should be aware of the increased risks the Pill brings. And obese women should think twice before going on the Pill; they’re twice as likely to develop heart disease than women over 35 taking birth control pills who are at their target weight.
If you’re over 35 and have a history of high blood pressure or high cholesterol, the Pill isn’t for you. And, while it’s still unclear whether diabetes poses a serious health risk for women over 35 on the Pill, diabetic women should consult a doctor.
Another hazy area involves migraines. The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists warns against taking the Pill if you’re over 35 and get frequent migraines, because they claim it can double or triple your risk of having a stroke.
Chances are, if you’re over 35 and are generally in good health, you should be fine on the Pill. But always check with your health care provider whether or not you have high-risk factors.
